Kegging

For packaging home brew, there really is only two options—bottling and kegging—and the choice between the two often comes down to time vs. money. Kegging has a higher upfront cost, with specific equipment required to handle the job—but it saves a lot of time and effort. Bottling on the other hand is more time-consuming but costs very little in comparison.

With either process the idea is to transfer your beer from the fermenter to your keg or bottles without unintentionally introducing foreign oxygen, bacteria or yeast. Oxygen will cause the beer to go stale quicker while bacteria and wild yeasts can lead to a change in the flavour—and not for the better!

Bottling

For bottling, there are four main steps to the process: cleaning, sanitising, preparing the beer and filling the bottles. Although much less expensive than kegging equipment, you’ll still require a bottling bucket, racking cane, large spoon, tubing, a tubing clamp or a bottle filler, bottles, sugar, bottle caps and a capper. Easy right? Drop in and we’ll walk you through it!
